The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has commenced a comprehensive upgrade of the 150,000 barrels per day (bpd) Port Harcourt Refinery and the Kaduna Refinery, aiming to meet global operational standards.
Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Soneye, announced this in a statement on Thursday in response to remarks made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo regarding the refineries’ rehabilitation.
According to Soneye, the revamp of the 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt and Warri refineries surpasses conventional Turnaround Maintenance (TAM), representing a full-scale modernization effort. Similar upgrades are now underway at the second Port Harcourt Refinery and the Kaduna Refinery.
Soneye also addressed Obasanjo’s concerns about the refineries, including claims of corruption and advice from Shell questioning the viability of the Port Harcourt Refinery. He emphasized NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to restoring all refineries to global standards for sustainable operations.
“We are making historic progress in revitalizing these critical assets. We extend an invitation to former President Obasanjo to visit the rehabilitated refineries and witness firsthand the advancements we’ve made,” Soneye said.
He lauded Obasanjo’s contributions to Nigeria’s development and welcomed his insights, noting that his wisdom and experience remain invaluable to the nation’s progress.
