Egypt’s petroleum ministry has announced that a drillship will arrive this month at the Eni-operated Zohar offshore gasfield to commence work towards boosting production, Reuters reported on Monday.
Located approximately 200 kilometres north of Port Said, the Zohr gasfield was discovered by Eni in 2015 and began producing in 2017. It is the largest gasfield in the Mediterranean, with potential resources in place of more than 850 bcm (30 tcf).
Average production at Zohr was 53.8 mcm (1.9 bcf) in H1 2024, significantly below the peak production rate reached in 2019, according to Reuters.
The Saipem 10000 drilling vessel is scheduled for deployment to the area in the coming weeks to commence a drilling campaign. The vessel is an ultra-deepwater drillship equipped with extended well testing and a first production facility.
