ExxonMobil has made a potential game-changing gas discovery in Egypt’s frontier Herodotus Basin, an area long regarded as underexplored. Before drilling commenced, the prospect, known as Nefertari-1, was estimated to hold up to 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, positioning it as a significant opportunity for Egypt’s energy sector.
This discovery represents a major boost for Egyptian authorities, who have been eager to unlock the potential of the Herodotus Basin, located west of the gas-rich Nile Delta and north of the oil-rich Western Desert.
ExxonMobil launched its first-ever Egyptian wildcat well, Nefertari-1, in mid-December, marking a new chapter in the country’s exploration efforts. The well was spudded just five weeks after Chevron began drilling its Khendjer-1 exploration well in the same basin, highlighting growing international interest in the region’s untapped hydrocarbon potential.
If the reserves are confirmed, this discovery could enhance Egypt’s status as a major gas hub in the Mediterranean, with potential implications for domestic consumption and exports to Europe and other markets.
