The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, in collaboration with the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) and other stakeholders, has announced plans to construct 10,000 housing units under the Renewed Hope Medic Cities initiative. The project aims to address the housing needs of healthcare workers across Nigeria.
Housing Minister Ahmed Dangiwa shared details of the initiative during a meeting with the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Thursday, January 23, 2025, in Abuja. He emphasized that the well-being of healthcare workers, including access to affordable and decent housing, is a key priority under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Housing is a fundamental need that impacts productivity, stability, and quality of life,” Dangiwa said, acknowledging the sacrifices made by medical professionals in challenging conditions. He revealed that 10,112 housing units are currently under construction across 14 locations, including 3,112 units in Karsana, Abuja; 2,000 units in Lagos; and 2,000 units in Kano.
Additionally, 12 Renewed Hope Estates, each comprising 250 housing units, are underway in 12 states, with plans to expand to the remaining 18 states. Healthcare workers will be able to own homes through flexible ownership options, including:
• Up to 30-Year NHF Mortgage Loans
• Rent-to-Own Schemes
• Installment Payments
• Outright Purchases
To facilitate access, the ministry has launched an online portal for applications: renewedhopehomes.fmhud.gov.ng.
The NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara, applauded the initiative, describing it as a significant step in addressing brain drain in the healthcare sector. He proposed the construction of 1,000 housing units in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the first phase, suggesting that these units should ideally be located within hospital premises to enable timely emergency responses.
Dr. Suleiman Abubakar Sadiq, a REDAN representative, noted that the Renewed Hope Medic Cities project will commence nationwide between January and February 2025. The initiative involves a partnership between the Ministries of Housing and Health, the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, and private investors.
The housing project is expected to enhance the welfare of healthcare workers, improve morale, and boost productivity within the health sector, reinforcing the government’s commitment to uplifting the living standards of Nigerians.
