Bayelsa Deputy Governor Calls for Agricultural Expansion to Boost Food Security

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has emphasized that efficient agricultural production is crucial to achieving food security and driving industrialization.

He made this statement on Tuesday while receiving members of the Nigerian Women in Agricultural Business (NIWAB) at Government House, Yenagoa.

Highlighting agriculture as a core pillar of the state’s ASSURED Prosperity Agenda, he urged stakeholders, including NIWAB, to leverage Bayelsa’s agricultural potential for economic transformation. He also stressed that the government would only collaborate with committed agricultural cooperatives moving forward.

NIWAB State President, Mrs. Ebimotimi Leghemo, stated that over 15,000 women had registered with the cooperative, expressing their readiness to boost food production for local consumption and export. She called on the government for support to expand their initiatives.

The deputy governor also tasked local government healthcare leaders with enforcing discipline in Bayelsa’s primary health sector. Addressing chairmen and executive secretaries of Local Government Healthcare Authorities, he criticized the focus on infrastructure over manpower, insisting that strengthening primary healthcare is essential for Nigeria’s overall health system.

Responding to their concerns about operational challenges such as inadequate funding, office space, and official vehicles, he assured them that the government would address these issues.
