Osun NSCDC Cracks Down on Illegal Mining, Arrests Suspect

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command, has dismantled an illegal mining site and arrested a suspect in an operation aimed at curbing unlawful mining activities in the state.

The operation, carried out on Friday, January 31, 2025, was led by the State Commandant, CC Igbalawole Sotiyo, at the Sambisa area in Kajola, Atakumosa West Local Government.

According to NSCDC spokesperson ASC Kehinde Adeleke, the site was discovered through intelligence gathering and surveillance efforts.

During the raid, a suspect apprehended at the site confessed to operating without the necessary licences or authorisation. Several mining tools, including draglines and pumping machines, were destroyed, while other individuals at the site managed to escape, abandoning their equipment.

Adeleke reiterated the NSCDC’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining and protecting the nation’s solid mineral resources. He also warned against engaging in unlawful activities, urging individuals involved to desist immediately.

Meanwhile, Sotiyo called on the public to report illegal mining activities in their communities, emphasizing the need for collective efforts in preventing environmental degradation and economic losses caused by unregulated mining.

The arrested suspect is set to face legal action, while efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing individuals.
