The Federal Government has completed over 135 water projects in the past year as part of President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen agriculture and enhance food security across Nigeria.
In addition, the government is currently executing 64 projects funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the Inclusive Basic Delivery System for Development and Livelihood Empowerment Improvement Project.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, disclosed this during the closing session of the 31st Regular Meeting of the National Council on Water Resources and Sanitation in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Utsev highlighted other achievements, including:
- 113 ongoing water supply contracts at various stages of construction
- 40 completed projects across rural, small-town, and urban water supply
- 44 projects delivered under the Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (PEWASH) program
- 45 projects completed under the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH) program
- Development of a National WASH Policy in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment and stakeholders
Additionally, the FG has finalized the construction of National Water Quality Reference Laboratories in Asaba and Umuahia to enhance water quality, sanitation, and hygiene nationwide.
With these efforts, the government aims to expand access to clean water, improve irrigation for farmers, and mitigate the impact of climate change on food production.
