NNPCL, First E&P Slash Gas Flaring by 96% at Anyala

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (First E&P) have successfully reduced routine gas flaring by 96% at the Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) fields, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s drive for environmental sustainability.

In a statement on Thursday, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, described the achievement as a major step toward cutting greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

Turning Waste into Sustainable Energy
The gas flaring reduction was achieved through an associated gas reinjection strategy at the Madu field, located offshore Bayelsa State. This approach ensures that gas, which would have been burned off, is now safely stored in an underground reservoir, minimizing environmental harm.

NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, hailed the initiative as a testament to responsible resource management.

“This achievement underscores our commitment to leveraging resources responsibly and optimizing production to meet energy needs while maintaining sustainability,” Kyari said.

Commitment to Environmental Responsibility
Echoing this sentiment, First E&P’s Managing Director and CEO, Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to sustainability.

“By substantially reducing our carbon footprint, we are contributing to a sustainable energy future that benefits both the environment and the communities we serve,” he stated.

The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s regulatory standards set by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and reinforces the joint venture’s compliance with global environmental best practices.

With Nigeria’s continued focus on reducing gas flaring and transitioning to cleaner energy solutions, this achievement represents a major step forward in the country’s environmental and energy agenda.
