Igbo-Etiti Chairman Pledges Commitment to Agricultural Revolution

The Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Dr. Eric Odoh, has reaffirmed his dedication to transforming agriculture in the region, emphasizing its role in combating hunger and creating employment.

During a visit to Ukehe to honor Chief Michael Unodiaku, a farmer who recently harvested a record-breaking 107-kilogram yam tuber, Dr. Odoh commended his resilience and commitment to farming.

He pledged to support Unodiaku with tractors and other essential farm inputs in the upcoming planting season, aiming to elevate him as a leading farmer at both state and national levels.

The chairman revealed that the council had set aside hectares of land for commercial farming, including crops like yam, cassava, tomatoes, pepper, and sesame (benny seed). He reiterated his belief that agriculture is the key to poverty eradication and job creation.

“If you want to eradicate poverty and create employment, you have to embrace agriculture. Anyone passionate about farming has found favor in my administration,” Odoh stated.

He further emphasized that Igbo-Etiti possesses vast arable land capable of feeding the state and beyond. The local government’s agricultural initiatives align with Governor Peter Mbah’s broader agricultural revolution agenda.

Expressing his gratitude, Chief Unodiaku recounted how he planted the record-breaking yam like any other, unaware it would bring him national recognition. As a multi-sector farmer involved in piggery, livestock, and crop farming, he appealed for government support in accessing tractors and farm subsidies to encourage more people to take up farming.

The unveiling of the giant yam was witnessed by the traditional ruler of Amakofia-Ukehe, Igwe Ogili, the Okeife of Amakofia, along with other dignitaries.
