Former NCAA DG Urges Government to Prioritize Staff Training for Aviation Safety

Dr. Harold Demuren, the former Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has called on the Federal Government to prioritize ongoing training for NCAA staff to ensure continued improvements in aviation safety across Nigeria.

Dr. Demuren, who served as the NCAA DG from 2005 to 2013, played a pivotal role in securing the US FAA Category One status for Nigeria. He highlighted that this achievement was made possible through consistent staff training and retraining programs.

Significance of FAA Category One Status

The US FAA Category One status indicates that a country’s civil aviation authority meets the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety standards. This status allows Nigerian airlines to operate unrestricted flights to the United States and enter into code-share agreements with US carriers, significantly boosting the aviation sector.

The Importance of Continuous Training

Speaking at the NCAA @25 Gala and Award Night, Dr. Demuren emphasized the importance of human capacity in aviation. “Aviation is evolving, and so is technology,” he said. “What we did in the past is not enough for the future. Training is essential, and continuous training is crucial for achieving progress.”

He also pointed out the costs of foreign training, including expenses for travel, accommodation, and time, stressing that investing in training will lead to safer skies.

Government Commitment to Training and Development

In response, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Barr. Festus Keyamo, echoed Dr. Demuren’s sentiment, reaffirming the government’s commitment to prioritizing staff training. He shared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved funding for international training programs aligned with global best practices.

“We are committed to elevating the aviation sector through improved infrastructure and transportation as part of the Presidential Priorities,” Keyamo said.

Celebrating 25 Years of Excellence

During the event, Capt. Chris Najomo, the current DG of NCAA, celebrated the authority’s achievements over the past 25 years. He commended past leaders, stakeholders, and staff who have maintained NCAA’s commitment to safety and global standards.

The event also featured awards presented to deserving staff, former DGs, and others who have significantly contributed to the success and growth of the NCAA. The evening was a celebration of milestones, past accomplishments, and the future of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
