Senate Cuts Agriculture Budget to ₦1.83 Trillion in 2025 Appropriations Review

The Senate has amended key allocations in the 2025 Appropriations Bill after identifying discrepancies during its final review.

Funding for the Ministry of Defence was reduced slightly, now set at ₦2.49 trillion from the previous ₦2.51 trillion.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s allocation dropped from ₦1.95 trillion to ₦1.83 trillion.

Similarly, the Ministry of Police Affairs experienced a ₦1 billion reduction, bringing its new budget to ₦1.224 trillion.

Pension allocations saw notable adjustments, with total funding for pensions, gratuities, and retirement benefits raised to ₦1.44 trillion.

Military pensions and gratuities increased significantly, from ₦252.6 billion to ₦383.9 billion, addressing prior funding concerns.

The National Pension Commission’s allocation surged from ₦529.4 billion to ₦804.7 billion, reflecting growing retirement obligations.

Despite revisions, the overall budget remains unchanged at ₦54.99 trillion, with statutory transfers fixed at ₦3.64 trillion.

Debt servicing costs hold steady at ₦14.31 trillion, highlighting Nigeria’s ongoing fiscal management and repayment priorities.

Recurrent (non-debt) expenditure rose to ₦13.58 trillion, while capital expenditure was trimmed to ₦23.43 trillion.

Citing Senate Standing Orders, lawmakers rescinded previous decisions and recommitted the revised bill for further consideration.

The amended bill successfully passed both the Senate and House of Representatives last Thursday, finalizing legislative approval.
