UK pledges £204m for Nigeria’s agriculture growth

A transformative programme has been launched to boost economic growth for smallholders and SMEs in Nigeria’s conflict- and climate-affected regions.

According to programme lead Ode, the initiative will enhance resilience to climate change, boost productivity and incomes, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and preserve natural ecosystems.

Running from 2023 to 2030, the programme supports climate-resilient, sustainable agriculture and forestry, aiming to transform Nigeria’s rural economy by addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges.

Ode stated that the programme would increase productivity, improve nutrition and food security, enhance climate resilience, reduce emissions, and protect nature.

“It will tackle Nigeria’s underlying drivers of conflict and insecurity, supporting sustainable, pro-poor, climate-resilient growth in selected rural markets,” Ode added.

Operating as a market facilitator, the programme identifies constraints in market systems and enables changes that benefit climate-vulnerable smallholders and entrepreneurs.

Ode revealed that Propcom+ targets 3.79 million poor and vulnerable Nigerians—50% of them women—helping them adopt sustainable agricultural practices.

With £95 million earmarked for the initiative, it currently operates in Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Bauchi, Plateau, Gombe, and Adamawa, with Katsina recently approved following talks between Gov. Dikko Radda and the FCDO.

Ode noted that the programme will address low agricultural productivity, natural resource conflicts, and climate change impacts, aiming to transform rural economies and reduce poverty.
