OPEC Urges Africa to Unlock 120 Billion Barrels of Oil Reserves

OPEC Secretary General, Haitham Al-Ghais, has called on African nations to boost investments to unlock over 120 billion barrels of proven oil reserves.

Speaking at the 2025 Nigeria International Energy Summit in Abuja, Al-Ghais emphasized Africa’s vital role in the global energy landscape.

He highlighted rising global energy demand, stressing the need for Africa’s oil and gas sector to attract significant investments.

“Africa’s proven reserves are crucial; the world will need more of this oil in the future,” Al-Ghais stated.

He warned against following misguided global energy policies, calling them “overly ambitious” and detrimental to Africa’s energy development.

Al-Ghais urged African nations to adopt balanced approaches that secure energy needs while addressing emissions concerns.

This call comes amid debates on energy transition, with experts advocating for a “just transition” aligning development with economic goals.
