Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reiterated the critical role of agriculture in ensuring food security, employment generation, and economic growth. This statement was made during the distribution of farm inputs and financial grants to 400 farmers in Delta State under the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Agricultural Support Programme. The event, held in Asaba, was organized in partnership with the You Matter Charity Foundation.
Represented by the wife of Delta State Governor, Tobore Oborevwori, Mrs. Tinubu expressed her delight at seeing women, youths, secondary school students, and cooperative groups actively engaging in agriculture. She emphasized that gardening, which sustained past generations, could still benefit families today through the ‘Every Home a Garden’ initiative, aimed at reducing economic hardship by encouraging home gardening.
“The beauty of it is that it’s not limited by gender or age. Growing your food helps promote healthier eating, improves your diet, and provides fresh, nutritious produce,” Mrs. Tinubu stated.
She also shared her personal commitment to agriculture, revealing that she maintains her own garden where she grows corn, vegetables, and other crops. She encouraged those who have not yet started gardening to consider it, stating, “Let’s join hands to grow more food and move from scarcity to abundance.”
Empowering Delta Farmers for Economic Growth
The wife of the Delta State Governor, represented by Mrs. Catherine Onyeme, praised the initiative as a vital step towards empowering student farmers, women, youths, and cooperative farming groups in Delta State. She described the programme as a means to equip farmers with tools and financial support, vital for enhancing food production and boosting economic growth.
Delta State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Val Arenyeka, also highlighted the essential role of farmers in achieving food security, urging more people to embrace farming for a sustainable food supply.
Additionally, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Harry Triakriowei, commended Mrs. Tinubu for her commitment to youth empowerment through agricultural initiatives.
