The Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) has raised concerns over the inability of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) refineries to produce enough Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. According to DAPPMAN’s Executive Secretary, Olufemi Adewole, the NNPCL-owned Port Harcourt and Warri refineries are currently producing naphtha instead of petrol, leaving Dangote Petroleum Refinery as the only viable source for local supply.
In a recent interview, Adewole stated that DAPPMAN members are prepared to lift petrol from Dangote Refinery, noting that the marketers would only turn to importation if the local supply is inadequate. However, he disclosed that Dangote Refinery is not yet ready to sell petrol to DAPPMAN members in bulk quantities.
“Our members will not go to the Port Harcourt or Warri refineries for petrol because the facilities are producing naphtha, not optimally producing the much-needed petrol,” Adewole explained.
He further emphasized that DAPPMAN is in ongoing discussions with Dangote Refinery to secure a fair price for bulk purchases. He stressed that while the talks are still active, the goal is to avoid being shortchanged and to ensure the best price for their members.
“We have depots all over the country, spread all over the coastal areas. So, all these depots are ready and willing to pick from Dangote. But is Dangote ready and willing? We’ve had several meetings with Dangote Refinery at the highest level of their management. We’re still talking with them,” Adewole said.
He concluded that DAPPMAN’s mission is to guarantee quality petrol at the best prices for Nigerian consumers, regardless of the product’s origin, provided it is sourced legitimately.
