China’s offshore energy giant, CNOOC Ltd, has officially commenced operations at the country’s first offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, transforming Asia’s largest offshore oil platform into a dual-purpose facility.
Located on the Enping 15-1 platform, the initiative marks a major milestone in China’s push to decarbonise its oil and gas sector. The platform now reinjects captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) into a well repurposed for CCS operations, with a total measured depth of 3,243 metres beneath the seabed.
According to CNOOC, this innovation not only contributes to permanent CO₂ storage but also enhances oil recovery from the reservoir — combining environmental goals with production efficiency.
The project represents a key part of China’s broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality while maintaining energy security, especially in the hard-to-abate oil and gas industry.
