Chevron Confirms Three Dead, 17 Injured After Angola Offshore Platform Fire

Chevron has confirmed the deaths of three contractor personnel following a fire incident aboard its Benguela-Belize-Lobito-Tomboco (BBLT) platform offshore Angola. The fire, which broke out on 20 May on the platform’s cellar deck, initially left 17 people injured, four of them critically, and one reported missing.

In a series of statements sent to Upstream, Chevron — operating in Angola through its Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (Cabgoc) subsidiary — revealed the third fatality occurred on 27 May in South Africa, where the individual had been transferred for specialised treatment.

The second death was reported on 24 May, while the body of the missing person was recovered two days earlier after extensive search and rescue efforts involving the Angolan Navy, Civil Protection & Fire Brigade Command, Port Captaincy, and local police.

Chevron expressed its “deepest condolences” to the families, noting that support is being provided to those impacted and their loved ones. Some of the injured have been discharged, while others remain in critical care in South Africa.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation as Chevron continues to coordinate with Angolan authorities and regulatory bodies.
