Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have jointly announced a significant new oil discovery in the Neutral Zone, marking the first such find in the area since 2020. The discovery was made at the North Wafra Wara-Burgan field, located approximately five kilometres north of the Wafra field, according to a statement released by the Saudi Energy Ministry on Tuesday.
The Wafra Joint Operations, responsible for the exploration, is a collaborative venture equally owned by Kuwait Gulf Oil Company and Saudi Arabian Chevron. This newly discovered oil deposit is being hailed as highly significant, with potential implications for future production capacity and regional energy security.
The Neutral Zone, a 5,770-square-kilometre area jointly managed by both nations, had previously seen suspended operations for several years due to political and technical disagreements but resumed output in recent years.
Energy analysts say this discovery could reinforce both countries’ positions in global energy markets and contribute to sustained oil output amid evolving geopolitical and economic conditions.
