US Approves Major LNG Export Expansion at Port Arthur Facility

The United States Department of Energy (DoE) has approved another liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project — this time an expansion of the Port Arthur LNG facility in Texas, marking a significant boost to the country’s energy export capacity.

The expansion, known as Phase II of Port Arthur LNG, is being developed by Sempra Infrastructure and will add two new liquefaction trains capable of producing an additional 13 million tonnes per annum (tpa) of LNG. This doubles the facility’s total planned capacity to 26 million tpa when combined with the ongoing Phase I, which is already under construction and expected to start LNG production by 2027.

“Port Arthur LNG Phase II marks a significant expansion of the first phase already under construction — turning more of the liquid gold beneath our feet into energy security for the American people,” said DoE Secretary Chris Wright in a statement.

The expansion had already received environmental and construction approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in 2023, paving the way for the Department of Energy to issue this latest export license.

This project is the latest in a wave of U.S. LNG approvals, following green lights given to other major terminals such as Commonwealth LNG, Golden Pass LNG, Delfin LNG, and Calcasieu Pass 2 (CP2) during the Trump administration. The U.S. continues to leverage its vast natural gas reserves to bolster energy security, geopolitical influence, and economic growth through global energy exports.
