The Lake Chad Research Institute (LCRI), based in Maiduguri, is leading efforts to rebuild agriculture and improve food security in North East Nigeria through climate-smart agricultural practices.
The initiative was spotlighted during the 2025 In-House Review Meeting and North East Zonal Refills Workshop, bringing together farmers, stakeholders, and experts to discuss sustainable solutions for the insurgency-affected region.
With North East Nigeria grappling with both environmental degradation and the long-term impacts of conflict, LCRI is adopting an integrated approach—merging innovative research with practical extension services. The goal is to empower local farmers with the knowledge and tools to thrive under changing climatic conditions while restoring economic stability and social resilience.
Key strategies include:
•Training programs to boost farmer capacity
•Climate-resilient crop trials
•Improved access to research-backed extension services
By bridging the gap between laboratory findings and on-the-ground farming, LCRI is working to revive agricultural productivity, enhance rural livelihoods, and contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding and sustainable development across the region.
