LNG-Powered Vessel Will Boost Nigeria–Asia Trade,’ Says Onne Multipurpose Terminal

Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT) has announced the successful berthing of Kota Oasis, a Singaporean-flagged LNG-powered container vessel, at the Onne Port in Rivers State — a milestone expected to significantly enhance direct trade connectivity between Nigeria and Asia.

According to OMT, the arrival of the dual-fuel vessel underscores the terminal’s commitment to green port operations, reinforcing its position as a key hub for containerised trade in West Africa.

With a capacity of 8,350 TEUs, a length of 260 metres, and a Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 78,501, Kota Oasis is owned and operated by Pacific International Lines (PIL). The vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel engine — an innovation that supports carbon neutrality goals while improving fuel efficiency.

Key Stakeholders Speak

Nicolo Scannavini, MD, Onne Multipurpose Terminal:

“This is a transformative moment for Nigerian shipping. We are proud to be part of this green future and remain committed to facilitating efficient and sustainable trade routes.”

He noted that OMT currently services both PIL and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), and is open to expanding partnerships with more global lines.

Dhruv Kohli, Head of Operations, PIL (Regional Office):

“We’re proud to bring one of the world’s most advanced ships to Nigeria. Onne Port is critical to our South West Africa Service. This boosts direct routes to China and transshipment to Singapore, cutting delivery time and lowering carbon emissions.”

He reiterated PIL’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, as the new vessel forms part of its broader fleet upgrade.

John Ejeh, Deputy Comptroller, Nigeria Customs Service (Onne Command):

“This is a welcome development. We fully support efforts that strengthen trade facilitation and the ease of doing business.”

Government & Agency Support

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) were present at the event, with officials pledging continued institutional support to accelerate innovation, port efficiency, and green shipping practices.

The NPA, under the leadership of MD Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, was commended for its role in ensuring the smooth berthing operation.
