CNPC Closes 7,000+ Wells in Major Move Toward Greener Oilfields

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) has shut down over 7,000 oil and gas wells across environmentally sensitive regions in a landmark initiative aimed at balancing energy production with ecological preservation.

The state-owned giant described the move as a strategic shift in its upstream operations—one that prioritizes sustainability, environmental restoration, and advanced technology alongside traditional output targets.

CNPC stated that its oilfield subsidiaries now treat ecological zoning as a strict requirement for all new developments, signaling a firm commitment to green energy practices.

“This marks a new era where environmental constraints are fully integrated into the planning and execution of oil and gas projects,” the company said.

The initiative underscores China’s broader drive to reduce the environmental footprint of its fossil fuel operations while investing in cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions.
