Enugu Slashes Band A Electricity Tariff to N160/kWh Effective August 1

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has announced a significant reduction in the electricity tariff for Band A customers—from N209/kWh to N160/kWh—effective August 1, 2025. This directive was issued to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, which took over from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company following the state’s transition to managing its own electricity market.

The revised rate is outlined in the EERC’s Order No. EERC/2025/003 titled “Tariff Order for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited 2025.” According to the commission, this new tariff is cost-reflective and incorporates federal government subsidies to alleviate the financial burden on consumers.

The move aligns with the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023, signed by Governor Peter Mbah, which empowers the state to regulate power generation, transmission, and distribution independently. This development is rooted in the 2023 Constitutional Amendment and the new Electricity Act 2023, which decentralizes electricity regulation in Nigeria.

EERC Chairman Chijioke Okonkwo explained that the tariff adjustment followed a comprehensive review of MainPower’s applications and reflects the need to provide more affordable electricity while supporting sustainable market operations within Enugu State.
