Pentagon Orders Withdrawal of 700 U.S. Marines from Los Angeles Amid Ongoing Controversy

In a significant move, the Pentagon has officially ordered the withdrawal of 700 U.S. Marines from Los Angeles more than a month after their controversial deployment by President Donald Trump amid intense protests and political opposition.

The Marines, deployed since June 9, 2025, were stationed at key federal buildings in downtown LA during demonstrations sparked by the administration’s immigration crackdown. Their presence was met with strong criticism from local leaders and advocacy groups, including veterans who questioned the constitutionality of using active-duty military on U.S. soil.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell defended the deployment, stating it delivered a firm message against lawlessness. However, California Governor Gavin Newsom filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of the move, asserting that deploying the National Guard without state consent violated federal law.

As the Marines exit, half of the National Guard troops have already been recalled, with local and state officials demanding a full withdrawal. Mayor Karen Bass hailed the development as a victory for Los Angeles and a reaffirmation of democratic values.

“This is a win not just for LA, but for every uniformed American who deserves to serve without being used as a tool of politics,” said Bass.

The legal and political ramifications of this deployment are expected to ripple well beyond California, as the nation debates the boundaries of military power during civil unrest.
