LAGOS: The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling structural bottlenecks and laying the groundwork for a self-sufficient refining ecosystem across Africa.
Speaking at the Global Community Insights Conference on the West Africa Refined Fuel Market held at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, NNPC Ltd’s Group CEO, Engr. Bayo Ojulari, delivered a keynote address titled “Building an African Refinery Hub.”
Ojulari outlined the company’s strategic roadmap, which includes:
Revamping its own refineries,
Taking strategic equity in the Dangote Refinery,
Exploring condensate refining opportunities, and
Supporting third-party projects to position Africa as a global refining hub.
“NNPC Ltd is ready, ready to co-create, co-invest, and co-lead the development of an inclusive, resilient, and competitive African refining ecosystem,” he declared.
He emphasized that key drivers such as infrastructure integration, indigenous ownership, and policy harmonization are critical to transforming Africa’s downstream sector, ensuring energy security, reducing reliance on fuel imports, and enabling industrial growth.
Ojulari commended the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) for hosting the event and pushing forward conversations that could shape Africa’s energy future.
He urged stakeholders to shift focus from ambitions to actionable results:
“Let’s build not just refineries, but the backbone of Africa’s industrial age. Let us refine not only crude, but the future of this continent.”
