MUMBAI, Aug 23 Onewave News, India’s Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has confirmed that trade negotiations with the United States are still in progress despite mounting tariff pressures.
Indian exports currently face additional U.S. tariffs of up to 50%, a move linked to New Delhi’s rising imports of Russian oil. A 25% tariff has already been imposed, with the second phase expected to take effect on August 27.
Jaishankar emphasized that while New Delhi remains open to dialogue, there are “red lines” that must be upheld particularly the protection of farmers and small-scale producers.
The ongoing discussions highlight the delicate balance India is seeking to strike between maintaining trade ties with the U.S. and safeguarding domestic economic interests.
