$17.5 Billion Louisiana LNG Project Hits Major Construction Milestone

The $17.5 billion Louisiana LNG project, led by Australia’s Woodside Energy, has reached a key construction milestone with 22% completion, underscoring America’s growing dominance in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector.

The project, based in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, is being developed by Louisiana LNG Infrastructure (InfraCo) a joint venture between Stonepeak (40% stake) and Louisiana LNG (HoldCo), operated by Woodside.

At a recent groundbreaking ceremony, Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill called the development “a game-changer” for the company and the United States:

“This project represents Woodside’s largest-ever U.S. investment and the biggest foreign direct investment in Louisiana’s history. It will cement our position as a global LNG powerhouse while delivering lasting returns and community benefits.”

Scale and Economic Impact

The project is targeting first LNG production in 2029, starting with three LNG trains totaling 16.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).

It has expansion capacity for two additional trains, fully permitted to reach 27.6 mtpa.

Construction, managed by Bechtel, already employs nearly 900 workers, with 85% of spend sourced locally.

The project is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs, generate billions in revenues, and strengthen U.S. global energy leadership.

Strategic Partnerships

Woodside has already secured several strategic agreements:

A 15-year supply deal with Petronas for 1 mtpa starting in 2028.

A gas supply contract with BP to feed the Louisiana facility.

Ongoing equity discussions with Aramco and other potential global partners.

Government Backing

U.S. officials have lauded the project as a symbol of renewed American energy dominance.

Chris Wright, U.S. Secretary for Energy, noted:

“Expanding LNG exports drives American prosperity, supports Gulf Coast jobs, and strengthens energy security for allies worl
