Canada’s Haisla First Nation launches world’s first Indigenous-owned LNG project.

The Haisla Nation in Canada has made history by becoming the world’s first Indigenous community to own a majority stake in a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.

Known as Cedar LNG, the project is majority-owned by the Haisla Nation in partnership with Pembina Pipeline Corp. It represents a new model for energy development, one that combines economic growth, sustainability, and strong Indigenous participation.

Cedar LNG will be built near Kitimat, British Columbia, on land owned by the Haisla Nation. It leverages existing energy infrastructure in the region while focusing on responsible development and minimizing environmental impact.

For the Haisla people, the project is more than an energy investment, it’s about long-term community development, job creation, and securing a stronger role in the global energy market. The project is also seen as a template for how Indigenous communities worldwide can actively participate in major infrastructure and energy ventures.

Industry observers note that Cedar LNG could pave the way for similar Indigenous-led energy projects, positioning Canada as a leader in both LNG exports and inclusive development.
