Maritime Construction Kicks Off at Senegal’s $1.2 Billion Port of Ndayane

Global logistics leader DP World has officially begun maritime works for the $1.2 billion Port of Ndayane in Senegal. The arrival of the Willem Van Rubroeck dredger, operated by the Jan De Nul Group, marks the start of this transformative project.

The dredger will create a 5-kilometer-long shipping channel, a critical component of the port’s infrastructure. Once completed, Phase 1 will feature an 840-meter quay and a channel capable of accommodating the world’s largest container ships, with a capacity to handle 1.2 million TEUs annually.

Phase 2 will add an additional 410-meter quay, further boosting capacity.

The construction phase will generate over 1,800 jobs, while operations are projected to create 2.3 million jobs nationwide, with 22,000 jobs directly tied to trade expansion.

DP World, in partnership with the British International Investment (BII), is advancing the project to position Senegal as a key trade hub in Africa.

Chairman and CEO of DP World, Ahmed bin Sulayem, stated:

“The Port of Ndayane will elevate Senegal and impact trade across the African continent. Beyond the port, we plan to develop an economic zone near Blaise Diagne International Airport, creating even more employment opportunities.”

The Port of Ndayane builds on DP World’s success with the Port of Dakar, which has seen container volume grow from 300,000 TEUs in 2008 to 800,000 TEUs in 2023. However, Dakar’s urban location limits its expansion, making Ndayane critical for Senegal’s long-term trade ambitions.
