The Federal Parastatal and Private Sector Pensioners Association of Nigeria (FEEPPPA) has announced plans to mobilize its members nationwide for a protest over the alleged maltreatment of retired workers by the management of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
The strike, set to begin on February 15, follows the management’s failure to engage in a dialogue with the pensioners, despite multiple requests.
The General Secretary of FEEPPPA, Comrade Emeka Njoku, made the announcement during a gathering of pensioners at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. He expressed frustration over the lack of response from FAAN’s new management, headed by Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, to meet with the pensioners to address their concerns.
Njoku highlighted several unresolved issues, including the non-functioning medical facilities for FAAN pensioners, the non-implementation of the minimum wage adjustments for pensioners, and the failure of the FAAN management to respond to previous correspondence.
“We have written to FAAN management on numerous occasions, requesting meetings to discuss these critical issues, but we’ve been met with silence. This year, we will not tolerate this neglect. It is time to address these ongoing challenges,” Njoku stated to a crowd of over 1,000 pensioners.
One key demand is that FAAN ensure the minimum wage, set at N32,000, is applied to pensioners, in line with the approval granted to active employees. Additionally, the union has called for the restoration of the tradition of regular pension adjustments when salary increases occur within the organization.
Njoku recalled that in 2002, a formal agreement was made with the management, stipulating that pension adjustments should align with salary increases. However, the current management has yet to honor this agreement.
He emphasized that the pensioners would not tolerate further neglect. “If we do not hear from FAAN management by February 15, we will be forced to mobilize our members across the country for a protest,” Njoku warned.
In response, FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku stated that she had received the pensioners’ letter in October and had scheduled a meeting with them for December 19, 2024. However, she emphasized her readiness to meet the pensioners and clarified that meetings with stakeholders, including pensioners, are held regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“We are committed to resolving these issues, and we are ready to meet with the pensioners to discuss their concerns,” Kuku said in a telephone interview.
As the deadline approaches, both sides await further developments.
