Malaysia Aviation Group Finalizes Deal to Transfer MASwings to Sarawak Government

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has reached an agreement to transfer full ownership of its regional subsidiary, MASwings, to the Sarawak state government.

The sale and purchase agreement, finalized after months of negotiations, formalizes the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties in October 2023.

MASwings, a key provider of regional air services in East Malaysia, operates flights connecting rural and remote areas across Sarawak and Sabah under the federal government’s Rural Air Services (RAS) program. The acquisition is seen as a strategic move to enhance air connectivity and support economic growth in Sarawak.

Speaking on the development, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg emphasized that the acquisition would allow the state to have greater control over its aviation needs. “This is a significant milestone for Sarawak. We aim to improve air connectivity, enhance service efficiency, and explore new opportunities for expanding regional travel,” he said.

The transition process is expected to take place over the coming months, with regulatory approvals and operational adjustments being finalized. Industry experts believe that under Sarawak’s ownership, MASwings could see expanded routes and enhanced services tailored to meet the region’s growing transportation demands.

MAG has expressed confidence in the transition, stating that the move aligns with its broader restructuring strategy and commitment to strengthening Malaysia’s aviation landscape.

With the deal now sealed, stakeholders anticipate a seamless transfer of operations, ensuring uninterrupted services for travelers in East Malaysia while opening new opportunities for growth in Sarawak’s aviation sector.
