In a strategic effort to unlock Yobe State’s untapped solid mineral resources, Governor Mai Mala Buni has announced the creation of the Yobe Mining Development Company (YMDC).
The governor also appointed Engr. Bamodu Yerima, a highly regarded geologist, as the company’s pioneer Managing Director.
The announcement was made in a statement by Yusuf Ali, Senior Special Assistant on Digital and Strategic Communication.
The establishment of YMDC forms part of Governor Buni’s broader economic reforms aimed at generating employment, boosting the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and attracting significant investments for sustainable development.

The YMDC will spearhead comprehensive feasibility studies on Yobe’s diverse mineral deposits, assess their commercial potential, and establish frameworks to attract investors for full-scale mineral exploitation.
Yobe State is home to a wealth of solid minerals, including gypsum, diatomite, limestone, kaolin, and potash, most of which remain underutilized.
The state government aims to leverage these resources to drive economic transformation and industrial growth.
Governor Buni’s choice of Engr. Yerima—known for his extensive expertise in mineral exploration and development—signals a clear commitment to developing Yobe’s mineral sector strategically and sustainably.
This latest initiative complements other major reforms by the Buni administration, notably the creation of the Yobe Agency for Public-Private Partnership and Investment Promotion (YAPPPIP). Together, YMDC and YAPPPIP represent key pillars of Yobe State’s plan to foster industrialization, attract domestic and foreign investments, and expand economic opportunities for residents.
