The Ministry of Youth Development and Heifer International have encouraged Nigerian youths to embrace agricultural technology for sectoral transformation.
This call was made during the launch of the 2025 AYuTE Africa Challenge Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja, marking its fourth edition.
The initiative, led by Heifer International, aims to empower agri-tech innovators to reshape Nigeria’s agricultural landscape through technology-driven solutions.
Government Commitment to Youth-Led Agricultural Innovation
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, emphasized that the initiative will equip young Nigerians with tools for sustainable development.
Represented by Ms. Kehinde Awujoola, he highlighted agriculture’s role in the economy and the need for innovation-driven growth.
“We must harness technology to enhance productivity, efficiency, and resilience in Nigeria’s agricultural sector,” Olawande stated.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting youth-driven innovations for national development and economic growth.
$40,000 Grant to Support Agri-Tech Innovators
Dr. Lekan Tobe, Country Director of Heifer International, announced that the top three finalists will receive a $40,000 grant.
This funding aims to help agri-tech entrepreneurs scale their innovations and impact Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.
Tobe described the challenge as a platform for identifying, nurturing, and supporting technology-driven agri-business ventures.
“Our goal is to ensure that today’s youth shape the future of agriculture while creating employment opportunities,” he added.
Long-Term Support for Agri-Tech Startups
Heifer International also provides business development support, technical assistance, and investor connections for participants.
Tobe noted that several past participants have successfully commercialized their innovations and secured additional investments.
“Our beneficiaries continue to develop solutions for smallholder farmers while driving economic growth and food security,” he said.
Since its inception 80 years ago, Heifer International has impacted over 46 million smallholder farmers across multiple continents.
Technology as a Key Driver for Food Security
Abdulmutalib Mohammed of the Presidential Food Systems Coordination Unit (PFSCU) stressed youth involvement in agricultural technology.
“Technology is a key catalyst for food security, and young tech-savvy individuals must lead this transformation,” he stated.
Past beneficiaries testified to the challenge’s impact, citing contributions to food security, economic development, and youth empowerment.
