TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné has announced that the long-delayed $20 billion Mozambique LNG project is now scheduled to restart by mid-2025, signaling renewed confidence in overcoming previous financial, security, and human rights challenges.
The project, located in the Cabo Delgado province, has remained under force majeure since 2021 after Islamist insurgents launched a wave of violent attacks near the Afungi construction site.
TotalEnergies halted work and evacuated staff following the security crisis but has since closely monitored the situation in partnership with Mozambican authorities and regional forces. Pouyanné indicated that the situation on the ground has improved significantly, and efforts to finalize funding and ensure community safety are progressing.
The Mozambique LNG development is expected to deliver up to 13.1 million tonnes per annum of liquefied natural gas, positioning the country as a major global LNG supplier once operational.
