Hong Kong is positioning itself as a global hub for clean energy, leveraging support from mainland China to pioneer next-generation fuels. After peaking in greenhouse gas emissions back in 2014, the city is steering towards a greener future by targeting marine and aviation fuel innovations.
Just weeks after its latest policy address, Hong Kong hosted the maiden voyage of the world’s first methanol dual-fuel roll-on/roll-off vessel, the CM Hong Kong. With a dedicated methanol storage site planned in Tsing Yi and tax incentives underway, the city is signaling its readiness to become a premier bunkering hub for green shipping.
Beyond methanol, Hong Kong is also advancing hydrogen adoption, deploying hydrogen-powered street-washing vehicles, and collaborating with mainland partners to scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production through companies like EcoCeres.
While challenges remain particularly the high cost of green fuels – Hong Kong’s financial infrastructure, strategic location, and strong political will position it as a rising leader in the trillion-dollar global energy transition.
